Today was my first session at the MacMillan ‘HOPE Course’ (Help Overcoming Problems Effectively) – helping people manage the day to day impact cancer has on their lives and rediscover their strengths after treatment ends.
7 new cancer buddies and 2 trainers from MacMillan joining together in Stevenage to share experiences and learn from each other as we progress on our cancer journey. Humbling to see the different stages and challenges of the group. The shared warmth and desire to help each other. Having to put down your own issues for a time to listen and help others. A focus on self management – working with others to manage the ups and downs of cancer. Turning common sense into common action!
Today’s session, on top of hope and building a spiral of positivity, was about relaxation , gratitude, and goal setting.
I realise I am the bouncy bunny of the group 🐇. Full of positive energy. And yet I was most chuffed at my ability to shut the f*** up and give space for others to share their anxiety and worries. Equally being able to share my worries with a group that has been through similar challenges. Sharing the joy of normal – for some this was their first time socialising.
So to my first lump of gratitude. My amazing family and friends. I have been wrapped in a bubble of prayers, well wishes, support and genuine concern. I have never felt alone. You are all amazing. 🤩
Goals are a work in progress. My opening quote sums up where I am at right now – how do I turn the absolute s**t show that is cancer to grow and become a better person. To build on the strength I have nurtured through my recovery.
The challenge now is turn that into specifics. Step by step and slowly.
